Here are words from just a handful of our former graduate/MA English students whose paths were greatly influenced by H.R. Stoneback’s teaching, mentorship, and friendship.

Mickey D’Addario is graduating from Duke University in May 2023 with a PhD in English.

Watch Mickey D’Addario’s tribute to Stoney.

In an earlier Shawangunk Review, Stoney wrote: “Poetry should give us permission to have fun.” While much of his verse was meditative and filled with gravitas, much of it was also playful.  Hear an excerpt from a fun  poem, “Song of my Soup, Or, A Condensed Autobiography in a Can” (Section 8) by H.R. Watch Nathan Lindsay Lee’s tribute to Stoney.

We’re mourning the loss of Nathan Lindsay Lee since his passing in 2024.

He had been enrolled in a Ph.D. program at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, studying linguistics and folkloric traditions in American Literature. While at New Paltz, Nathan participated in the 2018 Symposium and published multiple essays in the Shawangunk Review. Our emeritus colleague Jim Schiffer shared this note about him:  “…most of his work in our M.A. program came out of his many courses and close association with Professor Harry Stoneback, especially his papers on Hemingway and Elizabeth Madox Roberts. That he was a top student in my course on Shakespeare speaks to Nathan’s impressive breadth of knowledge and experience as well as the power of his intellect.”

Rest easy, friend.
