Storybook Theaters

For my lesson plan, I decided to create a miniature set and characters built out of wood, cardboard, magazine clippings, LED lights, a battery, copper tape, and paint. This lesson could be taught to middle school level students. It would show students how to story tell sequence and layer images in combination with learning about technology through adobe illustrator, laser cutting, and circuits.

First, students would research a story or play. Students could even collectively decide to pick a certain theme to theirs. Then, they would sketch out their own and create their drawing for 1 set, 1 character piece and possibly some additional pieces on Adobe Illustrator and laser cut them in wood. They would also use a default theater box on Adobe Illustrator and laser cut in cardboard.

The next step would be putting LED lights into the theater. I decided to make it where you can change the lights, so students could be more creative with their story scenes.

Students could decorate their scenes however they like with mixed materials. They could create found word stories.

Lastly, students could make collaborative stories, combining sets and characters with each others projects

.

I think that this project would teach or combine a lot of different skills like layering images, collaboration, decision making, and combining technology into art.

For my lesson plan, I had trouble designing a rubric, since it was my first time. I think it is difficult to grade students

  1. It looks like you put so much time and effort into this project and all the little sets came out so well!! I think story telling is so important, and maybe sometimes it gets overlooked in art classrooms. Story telling is a great way for students to access their creativity and express themselves in new ways. It is always so much fun to see what different interpretations everyone has when doing something like it. Afterwards when all the students get to hear and see everyone’s projects, it can open up more ideas for everyone and nurture creative thoughts.
