Minor Paper 4
(Refrigerators Between Us)
I`m introducing this project that is going to help to reduce the food waste in the large cities or in the high populated areas in general. The project main goal is to save the amount of food wasted in New York city on a daily basis and also helping the less fortunate people at the same time. This project does not require that much of capital for it to operate, mainly we are going to need a good working fridge that can operate in hot summers and winters alongside paper bags. The idea or concept behind this project is when people buy food from restaurants and food trucks instead of throwing away their food in the bins, they can wrap it up and put it inside the fridge therefore people who are in deep need of food can find some in the fridge. Then we talk about the city life we are talking about fast paced life so usually people who buy food do not put that much of thought about the food they throw away and most likely they don’t have the time to take their leftovers.
Requests for proposals:
1- Rockfall Foundation Accepting Applications for Environmental Grants Program
The Rockfall Foundation: “Through the program, grants will be awarded in support of projects that support and enhance the environment in the Lower Connecticut River Valley through preservation, conservation, restoration, or education and that increase public knowledge of and respect for its natural resources.”
In this program Grants usually range from $1,000 to $5,000, but up to $15,000 can be requested.
I found this program interesting since its more focused on the education and spreading awareness side regarding the environment issues in the world, because I think the very first step to a sustainable environment and future is to educate people and try tell them how important of a subject this is and how it will affect the other generations if we didn’t start taking actions, therefore in my larger project I’m planning to do the same thing from raising awareness in communities through placing the refrigerators and promoting the idea and creating events through social media, in addition educating people to appreciate the natural resource more is very important.
2- Quadratec Invites Applications for ‘Energize the Environment’ Grant Program
‘Energize the Environment’ Grant Program by Quadratec: “Quadratec, a leading online retailer of Jeep parts and accessories in the aftermarket, is inviting applications for its Energize the Environment Grant Program. Through the program, a single grant of $3,500 will be awarded to an individual or group currently pursuing a program or initiative designed to benefit the environment in their community.”
Any person or organization will receive a single grant of $3,500 from Quadratec.
In this program the well-know Jeep parts company is offering a grant in their local community, what makes this program appealing is that it is centered around physical project and innovations, for instance they are willing to grant projects such as park beautification, waste reduction initiatives and sustainable agricultural activities, I liked the fact that they are prioritizing their community at first place because it makes since to take care of your home town and improving it on the long run, thus also in my large project I’m thinking about starting the project in my local community for starters then it can expand and benefit other areas as well.
3- City Harvest Grant Program “Food Waste”
City Harvest is considered as one of the biggest food saving and rescuing establishments in New York City, aiming to support the communities including New Yorkers struggling to put meals on their tables, according to chief executive officer Jilly Stephens “City Harvest pioneered food rescue in 1982, and this year, will collect 59 million pounds of excess food to help feed the nearly 1.3 million New Yorkers struggling to put meals on their tables”, City harvest is offering $30,000 grant for new ideas or approaches suggested by students from various collages around New York to tackle the food waste issue, I choose this request of proposal since its affiliated with my main project goal which is similar to the organization goals and missions, the main goal for City Harvest is to rescue the large amount food waste and finding methods to distribute it to New Yorkers who are in need.
What to do next for my project?
So we went through the basics about the project, next I`m planning to see how much a practical refrigerators cost alongside deciding the major areas to place the fridges in which is most likely to be an area full of restaurants and food truck so people can have an easy access to them, also see which organizations are established in New York City that have a good background in reducing food waste.
