Dear e-portfolio Readers,
As a student I have always thought that I have the talent to be a good writer, however, I have noticed that I don’t have the creativity when it comes to writing. My creativity flourishes in my art, not my writing. However, after taking this course my outlook on writing has changed. After being tasked to write a poem for the course, I realized that I am capable of more than I give myself credit for. The poem was well written and Professor Rigolino even asked me to read it at an event in front of the English department. The ENG 160 course has prepared me for college-level writing and taught me the common errors in my writing. I have learned how to write professional business proposals, something very essential to my college career since I am a business student. A good habit that I have picked up this semester is outlining my work before I begin my essays. Writing down key points and ideas that I want to discuss in my writing helps me make sure that I talk about everything necessary. Another Important habit I have adopted is the act of starting my work at least a week before it is due, I do this in hopes of spreading out my workload and making due dates easier to handle. These two things have helped me in my writing, and I have seen improvements in my ability to research information. As well as improvements in the way that I organize my writing and the language and tone that I use throughout my writing.
Overall my experience in this course has prepared me for the next step, which is ENG170. I am confident in my ability to do well in this course because of my experience with ENG160. I now know what improvements I need to make in the way that I write and with the way that I prepare for a test. These realizations are a result of the ENG160 but also my development as a Student. This was my first semester, and the change from high school to college was one that took some adjustments. Despite the challenges I faced I persevered, and I have become a better person because of it.
Sincerely,
Elmer Vasquez
