From the Editors

The 35th annual Graduate Symposium marked a milestone for our graduate program and department. As we have since 1989, we celebrated another successful collaboration between graduate students and faculty, with Associate Professor Fiona Paton overseeing proceedings for “Innovation and Tradition: Re-Viewing Modernism in American Fiction.” The current volume of The Shawangunk Review (XXXV) includes the essays presented at this event. On behalf of the Graduate Program, we want to thank all participants, including our keynote speaker, Dr. Marc Dudley of North Carolina State University, for their submissions to this edition. Special thanks, also, to Vicki Tromanhauser, English Department Chair, for her generous support of the event.

The 2023 event was also an opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of Shawangunk Review founder H. R. Stoneback. In this volume of the Review we include poems, songs, and other remembrances dedicated to “Stoney,” offered both at the event and in the subsequent months. Our thanks to everyone who shared their work for this special section.

The submission deadline for Volume XXXVI of the Review is January 15, 2025. We welcome poetry, book reviews, and critical essays concerning any area of literary studies. Please see submission guidelines here.

Thanks also to Jenna Giombetti, English Department Graduate Assistant, for her work on this issue of the Shawangunk Review.
