My partner Becky and I met online to discuss our project together. We are doing two different lesson plans but they both connect with our big idea and the technique of glitch art. We both really enjoyed working with glitch art in class. We wanted to find a way to make glitch art more controlled rather than random glitching through coding.
What we discussed:
- Identity- How does technology have an influence on how we see ourselves?
- How Snapchat, Tik Tok, Instagram, all have filters that change the way you look drastically or subtly. Sometimes subtly can leave more of a negative impact because they change your features slightly and make you feel that that is how you look.
- Glitch art can be an artistic way to show how technology can cause distortion to our appearance.
- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5933578/ – Article discusses the negative effects of social media and how they are related to peoples’ choices of plastic surgery. People want to look like how they appear in these beauty Snapchat filters.
- We also discussed how technology can distort our perception of reality.
- https://medium.com/@mzarifis/how-is-technology-changing-our-perception-of-reality-and-the-way-we-view-things-ef313f194345 – talks about how we can so easily look up a picture of the Mona Lisa, and how it looks bigger and you bypass all the bulletproof glass, but in reality, when you see it, it is behind several inches of bulletproof glass and very small. We are also used to as a society, viewing multiple screens at once, causing us to see only bits and pieces of the whole. Whether we are multitasking by watching Tv and doing homework, where we catch bits of the show we are watching, or when photos are taken, we leave out the undesirable bits.
- This phenomenon of leaving out bits and pieces of photos and only wanting to be seen in perfect light and leaving out the rest of the true picture and only wanting to see the information that we believe is right could be portrayed through glitch art. If you are messing with the code of an image you are distorting its true state thus manipulating it into one perspective.
- You can manipulate the photos to how you see fit. Is it more beautiful now? Is it ugly? Is everyone else version wrong, while yours is right?
- This lesson will be for students 10-11th grade since there is an intermediate level of photoshop you need to have previously known to alter these photos.
- Using Adobe Photoshop students will create three digitally altered photos of famous art pieces to explore how technology distorts our reality.
- They will need a computer that has access to Adobe Photoshop.
- Is Glitch art enough to convey this topic? If yes, why? If not, why? What can I add to it to be enough?
Ask:
What is the problem?- Technology and social media can negatively impact and alter the way we look. This can be damaging to young peoples’ mental health as it makes people feel “more beautiful” with filters and editing.
How can glitch art alter the way we look?
Imagine:
Brainstorm ideas: Photoshop, photo editing apps. Glitch art but more controlled, how can we make glitch art more controlled.
Build and Evaluate:
Using photoshop and a tutorial I was able to come up with: (different methods)
Here are just 2 examples of a selfie I distorted. There are many different things you can do to alter the photos. The project will be more open to students experimenting with different techniques. The style is similar to the glitch art we created in class however, I was able to have different colors come out in the picture and you can glitch whatever area you want instead of random glitches happening.

Looking forward to hearing my classmates’ ideas and sharing mine and getting feedback!
The tutorial we based our techniques on:
This is such an interesting project and its so great your working with someone on it as well I think its going to be really interesting. There is so much that students can get out of this project and I cant wait to see what you come up with and how it relates to your lesson plan.
I really like the way you are tying in the use of social media to your project idea. Understanding how things like tiki’s-tok, instagram, snapchat, etc. affect today’s youth is really important and having this in your lesson plan is a great idea. Good luck with your project!
This is such a cool spin off of the glitch art we did in class together! it really takes the time to dive deeper into digital media and its relation to us as people which is something I think more people should pay attention to. Having the students identify the context and overall feelings they get from the initial famous artwork and then have them analyze how they feel about it after editing and distorting it with code would make for a really great discussion. The students can talk about how when you make an old classic piece of art digitally modified it brings the piece into a new context which is really exciting!
That is an extremely interesting an innovative process you documented. And I feel it also can bring another big idea into your work, perception and reality. Sure both are heavily individual base ,but if your students through this lesson can now see that everyone perceives things differently it can lead to greater understanding of art itself.
Daniela, I know we worked together but I still wanted to comment! I like how we collaborated but went in separate but still related directions! I enjoy your take on glitch and art and self-portraits by exploring the effect technology has on how we see ourselves and who we are! It’s nice that you are in the other class but I still go to see your process and final outcome! Good Job!!
Hi Daniela! I loved your presentation today on glitch art. I think you made a lesson that shows how to clearly teach this complex subject to children in an easy way. As always the art you made was awesome and really cool to look at!
I think it’s really cool that you guys collaborated on your final project, and it came out great, as did your presentation. I think your concept of identity being changed by technology and using glitch art to manipulate perspective is really interesting. I think one of the reason with tamper with photos in particular so much is because it’s hard to have photos portray the world as we see it. Or at least when I take a photo, it never compares to actually looking at the real thing.
