Welcome/Closing Remarks [Organizer]
Kiersten is an assistant professor of literacy in the Department of Teaching & Learning at the State University of New York at New Paltz. She teaches aspiring teachers how to teach reading and writing, and is particularly interested in digital literacies. Kiersten’s scholarship is rooted in making sense of how the 21st century classroom experience is both shaping and being shaped by ongoing advances in all things digital, and her recent work argues that blogs written by teachers have an important critique to offer policymakers from the view of the classroom. Before joining the faculty at New Paltz, Kiersten taught 3rd and 5th grade and was a literacy coach at a public elementary school in New York City. In 2015, she was named an Apple Distinguished Educator, and when she’s not teaching, writing, or playing with screens, you can usually find her running after her 18-month-old son, Allen.
