The 1990’s are known as the jump start latest recession. There was unrest within the United States as well as other areas of the world; economies were failing and attacks threatening the public. The War in the Middle East was undoubtably approaching as violence peaked and anger caused the U.S.to take action. An example would be, Operation Desert Storm in 1991. This attack was launched to protect American and American Ally oil supplies from Iraq which had been taken over by terrorist Saddam Hussein. (U.S. History) Chaos continued when the World Trade Center was bombed in 1993 by the Iraqian terrorist group known as Alkyd.
The tensions of War and war time spending would lead America almost blindingly into another depression. The Federal Reserve cut backs and capital inflation would be felt nationwide. Attempts at reforms seemed to only make matters worse for the already struggling middle class. Over the course of the decade millions would lose their jobs, unemployment would skyrocket as the new century began. Due to these events, numerous American’s were dragged into poverty.
The Map below shows the United States based on the 1990 Census. “Below Poverty, 1990.” Red being the areas that are the most poverty stricken.
