Overall, I came to enjoy this assignment and it has been one of my favorites so far. I have never worked with tinkercad before and found that it was fairly easy to learn and pick up on. I liked that we were able to use digital and technological means to make something tangible. I experimented with a few different ideas for boxes before deciding on a wishing well that has water on the inside as its lid. I chose a wishing well because I have a number of fortunes that I have saved from fortune cookies that I thought were motivational and inspirational. In the beginning, I experienced some frustrations while trying to navigate the workplane since the program was digital yet also a dimensional environment. It took me a little while to figure out how to get the shapes to fit on one another precisely. However, once I discovered the align tool, I found it to be really helpful to know that the different shapes of the piece were lined up perfectly just by picking the points I wanted them lined up at. I think that this assignment was helpful since 3-D printing is something that is becoming very popular in today’s society. It is something that can be used in many ways and will be valuable to introduce students to it. Furthermore, I think it is something I will explore in my lesson plan assignment.
When I began this assignment, I started with a circular base and then used on of the already created weave patterns from tinkercad to form the base of the box form.
Next, I added a top rim onto the form by copying the bottom base and then using a smaller version of the shape to create a hole. I grouped the shapes together once I was happy with their proportions.
After, I continued to build my form by adding structures to support the roof of the wishing well. I added small details as well by putting a handle on the support.
When forming the roof structure, I started with an octagon shape. I copied and pasted the form that I created to support it and then turned it into a hole on the octagon. I did this so that they would piece together perfectly. Next I completed the roof portion by using a pyramid shape that I added additional sides to in order to match the base of my form. I made this top shape slightly larger so that it would extend over the base to create a simple overhang. I topped the roof with a fun decorative shape. Then I created a small pail for the wishing well. I used an upside down cone shape that I cut the bottom off with a cube shaped hole. I copied this shape and then shrank it in order to create a hollow interior. I also put small holes in it so that I can put a string through it.
When I created the lid, I started with a texture shape that was square. In order to make it round, I copied the rim of my base form and used it as a whole to cut out the circle. I then used other shapes as holes to remove and excess material. As I continued, I created a small undercut using the bottom portion of the rim from the base so that my form fits snug into my base.
