I sought to address the target audience, 4-7 year olds and their parents, through the use of bright colors, large text and recognizable imagery. Many posters for children’s movies, specifically Pixar, have big, bold, and sometimes blocky 3-dimensional text that interact with the overall composition. Here, I attempted to utilize this sense of interaction, where the “Sewertopia” is glowing from the sewer cap. Because this is a puppet show and not an animation, my initial intentions were to make the poster entirely photographic. I didn’t think this would appeal to the target audience, however, so I resolved to using photographs as a reference for creating animation-like objects.
In researching puppets created by the shows designers, I came across a puppet that resembled a pile of garbage. To incorporate this idea, I arranged the objects underneath the sewer into a pile of fun-looking, colorful garbage.
