An independent study is only appropriate if a student is advanced and has a very clear project in mind which cannot be worked on in a class context. You need to find a full time professor, who is familiar with the topic and willing to work with you on this. Your research of the selected issue and related photographic techniques will be conducted independently. You will work with faculty in a self-initiated manner.

You will need to fill out the Indepdendent Study Packet  (check with faculty to confirm this is the latest form) and write and include a proposal which addresses the following questions (Part B of Independent Study Form):

  • Describe your proposed study project.
  • What is your method of study?
  • What background or experience brings you to this work?
  • What will you read and research to support your work?
  • What other artists work with this subject matter?
  • How does your work and research relate to the work of these other artists?

The instructor will give feedback and then draft a document for Part C.
Make sure the Advisor Signature Form in the packed is signed by your advisor and included in your paperwork.

After you have collected all signatures, worked with the instructor on part B and C, and attached your current transcript, you can submit the documents to the Art Department Secretary in the Art Office (FAB 225). They will assign a separate course number.
