Since students have already taken the course they are TA-ing in, being in the classroom for the second time (around 90 hours of contact in itself) provides an opportunity for synthesis. The synthesis goes in two directions: into the student’s own studio practice and toward developing an aerial view of teaching and learning. So this experience should support both.

First, contact the instructor of the course you would like to TA in before registration time. You will need to print and fill out an Independent Study form (please check with faculty if there is a more recent form available at the time of your application).  You will also need to write and include a proposal which addresses the following questions (Part B of the Independent Study Form):

  • How will the position enhance your own studio practice?
  • Describe the studio project you propose to work on.
  • Explain why you are interested in learning about teaching.

The instructor will give feedback and then draft a document for Part C.
The Advisor Signature Form needs to be printed and signed by your advisor and included in your paperwork.

After you have collected all signatures and worked with the instructor on part B and C, you can submit the completed documents to the instructor digitally.
