Reflective Cover Letter
After completing the Writing and rhetoric course at SUNY New Paltz, I learned more about the topic. My primary takeaway from the class was the overall process of looking. I learned about things that could affect the meaning and emotion of a photograph, such as frame magnetism, cropping, the rule of thirds, as well as the potent symbolism present in pictures. Before this class, I had never really investigated photos on a deeper level. I would often just ignore any deeper message and would just look at what the image depicted. It was only when I took this class that I started to break down images looking for symbolism and compositional techniques used by the photograph or artist. In my future career I will be using the skills I have picked up quite frequently. I am planning on getting my degree in Electrical Engineering. The skills I learned from Writing and Rhetoric will come into play when I need to write technical memos for projects. The technical memos serve to promote and explain the projects you are working on or proposing to others. It is important to get your ideas across in a clear and concise manner. In my process of writing, I have changed the way I formulated my conclusions. I now try to avoid going for the endings starting with the typical words used in a high school paper. I have become stronger in conducting research and have improved in my thesis writing. The weaknesses that I still need to overcome is my sentence structure and repetition. These are areas in my writing that I need to grow in for the future. My repetition can take away from the clarity of the message that I want to get across in my papers. The aspects of the main course assignments that I felt were most successful for me were critical thinking and the research process. I learned about finding credible scholarly sources as well as using my analysis to create my own judgement and ideas. These aspects were the strongest parts of my writing that I am confident in carrying over to any future writing assignments.
