Children’s Rights Society SAGE Mentoring Program
The Children’s Rights Society works to support an educational mentoring program for children who are neglected and/or in foster care. Many of these vulnerable children are educationally “falling through the cracks”, resulting in high dropout rates and very low college entry rates which severely limits their chances for success.
The goal of the SAGE program is to provide educational mentoring by coming alongside a vulnerable child to help increase their chances of success in school which, in turn, will provide an overall positive outlook for their future. The SAGE volunteer will meet with the child one hour per week outside of school in Orange County, NY to give one-on-one educational support. This is not a tutoring program, although help with homework and/or school projects is encouraged. High school honor students will be available for tutoring in specific subjects if this need is identified. The SAGE volunteer will assist the child with organizational skills, encourage sports/extracurricular activities, monitor school grades and attendance through the student’s school web portal and strive to increase the child’s overall school engagement which will empower them to look towards a brighter future!
