Why Write?

We asked: What is your favorite thing about writing or about the piece you submitted to New Voices, New Visions? Decorative Image

Here’s what our students said:

Writing is not just putting paper to pen but meaning to words.

My favorite thing about writing is how it allows me to express myself through words. I’ve always been someone who really loves to talk and be creative… […] [It] allows me to highlight that part of myself, but what was really special to me about this piece is how it helped me realize how much I’ve grown in accepting my identity. […]  I am not at all insecure about who I am, my heritage, and what I love to do.

The written word has that rare-if unparalleled – capacity to preserve the singularity of Truth and simultaneously offer infinite dimensions whereby it can exist. Moreover, the experience of writing is akin to holding a hard-cut diamond to the light, and watching the waves refract into smaller luminescent rays that continue to travel through time and space – right to the core of the human heart.

My favorite thing about writing is the ability to use my voice. I love using my words as a form of expression, whether […] poetry, an opinion- based assignment, or storytelling. Words are so powerful; they are our strongest form of communication, but can also be used as a creative outlet. […] Writing feels like relief to me: Having my perspective heard, my story shared or letting go after a long day.

Writing gives me the opportunity to express myself by conveying my thoughts and ideas in a way that authentically reflects who I am. Through writing, I feel empowered. […] [Writing has] made me realize the extent to which I have grown as a person, especially in regards to finally accepting my cultural identity.

My favorite thing about writing is how easy it is for me to have words flow out of my brain and onto the screen. It’s as though I have unlimited power and possibilities at the tips of my fingers. Writing feels comfortable and peaceful to me, and I enjoy being able to express my mind and opinions, whilst still having a strong writer’s voice that doesn’t get lost through my papers.

I love that I can express myself while writing and just be who I am.
