Work inspired by Marilyn Minter” Pretty Dirty , opens November @ Brooklyn Museum.

So, what happened this am was some gold spray paint, India ink and pen. There was a field trip I was not informed of, so I took advantage of the time in my classroom. I was thinking about the surrealist painters, Dali, and Frida Kahlo -especially. However, I saw the NYT newspapers in a pile and Marilyn Winters grabbed my eye. After researching her work online more, I discovered how beautiful her work truly is.. she incorporates much dripping, melting and oozing techniques, while exploring feminist imagery.

Here, I was shaking the paint into blobs, then after examining the forms, I began to see petals, stems, bugs.. I drew in pen some critters… lots of bees. ( Yesterday I was watching the bees at my fathers house- he has 2 hives). I am thinking about the change of seasons… I was watching bees crawl out of the hive yesterday, some died and fekll into the grass.  Currently, we have lost light and the weather is becoming drearier….seasonal depression is setting in!  I think I am exploring many different ideas within this work- I am revisiting later

  1. Unfortunately I can’t see any of the pictures. You might want to try re-uploading them in the post. I really want to see them, this all sounds really interesting! Hearing you talk about shaking paint into blobs reminds me a lot of some of the pieces you were doing last summer in studio (like dripping wax and wood stain onto the paper).
