In my current work, I have submitted pictures of the overall process. I have the image of the raw pastel, the layers of wax, and the carved layer with oil paint. On top, I zoomed in to show the last layer which was the line drawing I did with the addition oil paint. I used an oil paint stick which was quite fun. I hope that it is easier to register in the zoomed in picture. I am curious if the line and the pastel drawing register as a cohesive unit. I was concerned with that when planning the piece. I did enjoy Lindsay’s recommendation of keeping the negative and positive space in the work. I will try that in a future work, or zooming in on a building like she recommended. The recommendation gave me some ideas.

  1. this is really promising, Melissa! I love the way your natural love of precise detail is both undermined and enhanced by the material and somewhat arbitrary juxtaposition (mysterious in terms of significance and arbitrary in terms of placement.)

      • Andrea, I juxtaposed an image of a coffee shop and the graffiti directly across from it. You can see this image from this coffee shop if you are sitting at the window. I used these two because they are physically opposite of each other.

  2. I love this. It almost looks like you’re sitting inside a shop across the street, looking out of a window that has this red line image on it. Was that your intention?

    • Actually no, I was not sitting inside a shop. But that leads me to some ideas for suture pieces. Thanks Lindsay!
