Silver and Hawkins

In the scene immediately previous, with Silver in the brig, he seemed ready to fact death back in Bristol. Jim, however, was not willing to let that happen, and sneaks Silver out on longboat. While Jim is not willing to join him, Silver has clearly left a lasting impact on the boy for the better.

(For copyright reasons, the actual scene could not be reproduced as a video. It has been recreated as closely as possible through still images and transcripted lines. 1:29:40-31:24)

[Jim checks that the coast is clear, then leads Silver out on deck and over to a longboat.]

JIM – There’s food for a couple of days…

JIM – …pistol, and powder. Go quickly, now.

SILVER – Jim… you’re a prince among thieves.

[Jim hands Silver a bag of gold, which Silver had previously pinched from the treasure on the island.]

SILVER – You taken your share?

[Jim nods, and Silver nods back gratefully as he puts the bag in his pocket.]

JIM – You’re about a mile and a half off the North Devon coast.

SILVER – Jimmy… if you ever want help or advice–

JIM – I won’t be coming to you.

SILVER – Yeah, it’s probably best.

SILVER – But if you ever want adventure, want to feel that spirit inside, you come looking for Long John. He’ll be waiting.

JIM – I will.

[Jim gets up and tosses the line from the ship onto Silver’s longboat.]

[As Silver begins to lower the boat, his parrot–Flint–is heard squawking.]

SILVER – And keep Flint for me, for safekeeping!

JIM – [concernedly] Go on, go on!

SILVER – I’ll come for him one day. [He continues to lower the boat into the water.]

SILVER – [rowing away, at a distance] Remember, Jim! Any fast living, come looking!

SILVER – [from offscreen] I’ll be there, I will, my gentleman.

SILVER – [from offscreen, echoing and fading] ‘Cause a fine gentleman you’re going to make.
