Q3. Focusing on the language of the text, analyze how Zimmerman establishes his  stance and connects to his audience.

Focusing on the language in the text you can see how Zimmerman establishes his stance using words and examples that connect with emotion, and by using facts on how people see America in a negative way to motivate many to want to have a Gap year for college students. Especially when he says “We’re creating better citizens, and a better country. It isn’t just that required service would benefit our students, who would be exposed to the diversity and complexity of America. It would also make our nation a more decent and humane place, for everyone” he goes on to explain that it would be beneficial to the world which would connect to much of the audience who wants America to look good.

 

Q4. As a student, what do you think of Zimmerman’s proposal? Explain why you should give the proposal serious consideration, or if not, explain your rationale by highlighting the fundamental flaws. How might a gap year  impact you, your family or community

As a student what I think of Zimmermans proposal is that what he wants to do for America is unnecessary and time consuming. As a college with 2 jobs and as a student with many friends I understand how busy our life is and how fast time goes by, I also know how lazy teenagers are and giving students a year to do absolutely nothing will not help anyone. Even though Zimmerman will say it’s mandatory many students still will not attend. Many things are mandatory now for students and they still do not mind not attending it does not phase them because they are young and believe they have no consequences. It may also impact communities by having more students in their neighborhood starting problems because they have nothing better to do at home. And many kids won’t be able to stay home or do community work, people have real issues in their life and if they’re going to be home they would need to be working a full time job.  Many won’t be able to make America look good.
