Mid term

Dear Mom,

So recently I have discovered my favorite place to go on campus and it’s the SMP center! (Scholar Mentorship Program) It is located in the basement of the student union building directly to the left once you get off the stairs, now the student union building is connected to the Atrium which is the giant glass building. Once you walk into the door the atmosphere changes to what I would describe as somewhat of a coffee house due to the styling of seats, there are comfortable chairs with low tables to do your work and place your laptop on and if that’s not your style then there’s a high table with high chairs and remind you this is all when you first walk into the first room. Then as you make your way to the front desk to sign in you are greeted by the person working there and everyone who sits at that desk greets you with a smile, even though they have a mask on, but you know what I’m talking about, and they’re always polite and tell you to have a good day. Then what I usually do is head to the back to where the computers are since they have swivel chairs and you know how much I like swivel chairs, but not without saying hi to Mark the SMP Director in his office and he’s always happy to see me and ask how I am doing along with asking how my classes are and just showing that he cares. Now before going to the computer section, you pass a room full of chairs and a smartboard which students can ask to do to hold giant group study sessions so that they can help each other out. Past that is the “computer lab” it’s not so much as a lab then it is just an area but either way, it has nice computers that we can use and they’re all up to date and can function, this is mainly where I do work when I’m by myself. I enjoy the front room more since that’s where more of the people are so you can socialize and everyone is nice to each other, plus the room is brand new so the colorway is set to match the college colors which is very nice.  This is “a place students can call home” directly quoted from Mark himself and he is completely correct I feel at home here. Did you know the SMP program was founded more than thirty years ago! Also, did you know that almost all the workers inside the SMP center are current SMP students or SMP alumni, but seriously I’m glad I listened to Emily and applied because this gives me a great place to meet people as well as have a quiet place to study and do homework and it makes me feel home even though I am far from it.

Love, Your Son Jack
