I started the revision process by reading over all of the feedback from my professor and doing the easy things first. By easy, I mean correcting citations errors, the heading and page numbers, quotation marks and things like that. Then I reread both of my essays and started looking at the feedback about how I wrote. Many times, the feedback was to expand on my analysis of a quote. I used the “Critical Thinking” video to guide my revisions and be more clear in my analysis by trying to elaborate and be more specific.
Another thing that I saw in the feedback was that I had to tie things back to my thesis, which was kind of hard for some paragraphs, especially because my thesis changed from the first two essays. After going through all of the feedback, I added in information from my new source. I read through my first two essays and looked for ways that I could add information from the new source that either elaborated or supported a point I had already made.
Then I combined the two essays. This was harder than I had thought it would be and I had to cut some things out because they were nor longer really relevant based on my new thesis. I also had to cut and paste whole sections to make the essay flow better.
Going through this process was kind of laborious, but I can see how practicing these skills, especially critical thinking, can transfer to other settings. When I wrote my first essay, I thought I understood pretty well how my object connected to the wicked question. Then, as I was writing the second essay, I began questioning my assumptions about how great the American Girl Doll was at inclusion. By the third essay, after reading a few chapters in my new source, I was able to see even more how there was way more to the object I chose and how it connected to the wicked question, which is why I had to change my thesis. This process of critically analyzing an issue by researching and questioning my prior assumptions is something I can use all the time, even when I see something on TikTok.
