Astor Milan Salcedo’s work at first reminded me much of Gerhard Richter’s overpainted photographs, but as I saw more of Salcedo’s work, I found some series of particular interest that really focused on addressing the place of the image with the painting he utilized. The way the overpainted photographs are described, the painting on top adds a new dimension to each photo and can help create a new feeling for the viewer. His “Construction” and “Once Upon a Time” series have a variety of images showed how he utilized the place and colors of a place to form a larger idea about the place.

My favorite series by him is his Japan series. This is Salcedo’s description of the series:

“Tokyo is an exciting place. Its culture, its people make it unique – even breathtaking at times. The old and the new, the tradition and the visionary are at a constant battle. Each fighting for its place in society and simultaneously fulling its own power from its adversary. The combination makes it perfect in every aspect”.

Both the way that Salcedo applied the paint and colors he chose in both images (above & below) really add to the overall feeling of the image. The hectic, frantic red application of paint adds to the sense of busyness of the streets of Tokyo and the application of the cooler tones creates the opposite feeling in the other image. It was extremely interesting to see the way that Salcedo applies paint and how that affects the feeling of an image.

This past week was a weird week as I was out one day incredibly sick and then had a snow day on Thursday (a true rarity in NYC). I found in the beginning, working again with some altered paper but as the week went on, I did more collage work. The second work, I cut out a fence that blocks my path every morning. I also got injured at work a week and a half ago from a student and wanted to try to turn my documentation of the injury into a piece itself (through digital collaging of sorts).

My latest image transfer was on the back of a drawing board that I had. I was nervous about the surface taking down the image and having it show up but it worked out pretty well. I also tried making the image larger than the standard 8.5×11 by splitting the image and making it larger. It’s a good idea in theory, but I don’t really like the line that shows up and find it pretty distracting. I’m thinking the net surface I work on will be a lighter one in color as the past two I have done have been relatively dark.

I continue to look into how museums impact art education, and vice versa. I also am continuing to look into the concept of accessibility for visitors of a museum. For the museum that I will be focusing on, I have narrowed it down and have decided to focus in on MoMA.  While it is an extremely well known institution, I feel that that can contribute to my research and better allow for me to see the transitions and change in approaches that it has and continues to utilize. I am already a little familiar with some of the outreach programs and teaching opportunities offered by MoMA but I still need to look more into the programs offered by the museum. In the next couple of weeks, I hope to be able to find out more information and visit the museum to take specific notes on the set up/space of the museum and how the visitors are either encouraged or discouraged in their visitation. These notes will comprise of observations both written and photographic. I also will investigate into the various programs offered by the museum and have considered also looking into specific individuals that have played a role in the museum’s educational department, noting key differences in approaches and programs enacted under their supervision (I am still unsure of this part of the research). Again, with being such a well known institution, I am more likely to find more visible signs of change that have been enacted over the years in their teaching approaches, just like art education’s own re-conceptualization.

With these, I wanted to try actually printing onto altered paper so I painted the paper before putting it through the printer.

This is my first attempt at transferring onto an altered surface. I wasn’t sure if it would work with my inkjet printed picture but I was pleasantly surprised to see it transferred pretty well onto the slate. Huge thanks to Brette for the slate!

I was recently reading the NYT magazine form September and a featured article reminded me of Lindsay W. and her current research involving spaces and places. The images above take place in Eithiopa… . the photographer describes the inspiration for the photos as  feeling like a suspension in time and a real feeling of nowhere.  When talking about the landscape, the photographer also mentions that the “comfort zone” is completely non existent but you get “used to it”  after a while. I was thinking about how Lindsay describes her own workplace and the deterioration that surrounds her constantly. Frazzetta describes the volcano shots as, ”  an atmosphere from hell, the noise of the lava, the gurgling, it is incredible but also hell”. Perhaps, we can all view ” Place” as an inspiration for us to rise up above our current situations… and preserver forward!   Personally, not having a classroom and traveling all over daily really does feel like  “hell”  but I am honestly striving to see the positive this year in my own situation, similar to Lindsay’s own frustrations with her workplace spaces…. .

At the winter session, I showed a variety of different works and chose to pursue my painted photographs depicting my feelings about a place. Throughout the Spring semester, I will be continuing to do so through daily studies collected in a workbook, similar to the small pieces I brought to winter session on the standard printer paper. These studies will be presented each week. At the same time, I will be working more with trying new ways of utilizing different mediums, including different techniques in transferring images to work with. The start of the semester will be focused primarily on more traditional paper materials, including photo paper, card stock, and canvas paper. Images of these experiments in processes will also be shared as they are made each week for feedback and thoughts from everyone.

As the semester goes on, I will continue to experiment with different techniques, including working on alternative surfaces (currently canvas (primed & unprimed), wood, and slate). I will also be continuing my daily studies, continuing to paint on photographs in response to letting out my feelings/anxiety from the day and serving as inspiration for my final works. By April, I hope to have chosen a definite medium/transfer process to pursue and begin to create my final works getting at least 6 done by the time Summer semester starts. I think it would also be interesting to present my workbook along side the final works in the summer show as it help depicts the processes that I have gone through.

I decided to try out painting similarly to my earlier feeling paintings on top of these super imposed graphic images. The bars create the trapped feeling I feel everyday at school and the colors (both of the image and paint) themselves reflect my feelings from that location.

This reading was quite interesting, though I struggled at times with being able to stay focused on the writing as I would get distracted by the drawings. Regardless, it was interesting to see how the two go hand in hand with one another.  After all, just as words are often used to convey our own thoughts, so to can drawing be utilized as well. I feel like so often, words are the automatic go-to for expressing ourselves- perhaps this is due to the notion that words have a more definite meaning with less room for interpretation. Drawings and imagery itself however I feel often is perceived as having a looser meaning to it, feeling not as rigid.  Thus, I feel that it is important to remind ourselves of the duality of word and drawing, and consider more deeply how the two relate to one another and also how they can be utilized together. The five drawing actions referred to served as a way of looking deeper at the roles that different actions used in actually drawing play and how they can relate to larger ideas trying to be portrayed. Often when I draw, I do not usually put a deeper meaning into what I am making- I often draw just because. However, it certainly is worth a second look if there could really be more to what I am drawing that I may not be consciously aware of.

Continuing with the idea of observing place, I started doing these photo collages of different places/element of my school blending together. I tried experimenting with the effects that black & white vs color images have against one another. I’m not sure if I should also try to incorporate paint into them as I have been doing. Thoughts?
