I have been patiently awaiting this book by artist Nick Sousanis! Although, I have been able to only browse as it just came yesterday, the illustrations are amazing! I actually showed a few quick pages to some students today and they were blown away! One student actually didn’t want to give it back! I do plan on intertwining the art of graphic novels and study of comics as an art form into my instruction, hopefully after break when I have had some time to spend with the material.

After reading a short article about the text- type triptych by artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, I was thinking about how powerful typeface can be when integrated in art. At the Basel in Miami recently, the artist stenciled messages onto pages of the NYT in reaction to the presidential election results.  Instantly, I thought of artist Jenny Holzer and also Shirn Neshat, I am also drawing connections to Melissa’s artwork as she is so passionate in about sending messages in her art work. The power of words is really emphasized as this work by Tiravanija demands the viewers attention and addresses real world situations. I also think Bruce Nauman would be a nice reference in relation to word play as he is as seen in many of his neons when talking about contemporary arts.

Artist Kerry James, born in Birmingham Alabama, integrates African American pop culture as his subject matter into public art installations, paintings and sculptures. He pays tribute to the geography of his up bringing while also expressing frustrations of peoples.

Ryhthm Mastr is a comic book  he designed that pairs African sculptures as in competition with the ” cyberspace elite”  that suggests people are losing sight of traditional values.  I admire this artist for his ability to convey feelings of empathy through his works ( especially his characters ) as he suggests feelings of invisibility many African American people are feeling  during these tumultuous times. This is an artist I would implement when teaching identity/ popular culture… I plan on investigating his comic book soon, more posts to come!
