The past couple of weeks I have been doing photo paintings of my school environment, trying to paint my feelings onto the space to depict them in response of the location. As I have been doing so, it has forced me to look closer into my surroundings and made me think more about the effect that a location (and how it is/is not maintained) has on a person.  The school environment itself is not a pleasant or welcoming one. It is dark, not in the best conditions, and often quite dirty. It creates a depressing, claustrophobic feeling, and looking closer in this environment makes me more aware of such feelings. The closer I look at it, the more upset I feel. So this week, I wanted to focus on the environment of the space I spend almost 8 hours in a day. It has forced me to become more aware of my relationship to the space/environment around me and the ultimate effect it has on me.

Jenn, I am in awe of your work, this is in response to the post you literally just put up, I know you mentioned you are influenced by artist Kerry James ( I think)?  But, I immediately make a connection to artist Jean Michel! You have included suggestive subject matter and although I am unclear as to what you are conceptually exploiring, I am seeing strong movements of colour. In your work, you often appropriate many elements of drawing, painting and motion in brushstroke and color..  I like where you are headed with the abstraction here also. A cute book I have is titled, Life doesn’t frighten me. The book includes Basquiat’s works paired with Maya Angelou poetry. Although it is meant for a younger audience, it easily could be facilitated for any age… If you want to borrow, anytime!! Great resource!

So I started to try and make my work more personal and I believe I have made a step in the right direction with this finished work. I have been thinking of Kerry James Marshall and I am dying to see the show ASAP! image

Still enjoying the soft pastels and the pan pastels. As I continue on with this image, progress has become slower as I work with the details. I wish I chose a larger format because the pastels do not allow for details with such a small image size. However, I continue on. The car was time consuming, but fun as I lost myself in it. The tree will eventually be cut out and a solid color of an alternative piece of paper will be placed behind it.melissa-mizerak-most-recent-work

Jenn, I really cant stop thinking about your summer art work and admiring how passionately you researched the endangered species of local birds, indigenous to your area . Upon viewing some recent artwork, I see you are collaging, and maybe working this into your paintings… I saw some of these birds online that included font. Maybe up your ally? I cant wait to see your finished piece!

As previously mentioned on my personal blog, I had some problems with my printer this week but the pictures ended up looking pretty cool. However, because of this it was also a challenge for me in painting over them- the image of the place was already “distorted”, looking unlike  what it originally looked like so I struggled a bit with adding additional marks over it. I would also be curious to try these pictures again more correctly and see the difference in the two sets.
