Recent study- Joe ( Brette)
I had some extra canvas in my garage, but I didnt have the time to stretch something. This is a small, acrylic painting, stapled to the lid of a Gesso container….I am thinking too much blue, but I have little paint left. It’s too cold to paint outside any longer… this was done at my friends apartment, yes that is a Labrador! Not finished….
Current Artwork
Sketchbook
I recently found a sketchbook from when I was four years old. It’s pretty crazy to see all of the colors I was using even back then. I was still drawing people and landscapes. Mostly my family members and my turtles. In one of my last posts I commented on how I didn’t plan any of my paintings out and these sketches support that! I just colored right away. It shows how important my family and turtles were to me, as well as being outside. It was such an awesome find and I even got one of my drawings made into a necklace!
Slate studies- Brette ( work in progess )
So, a few weeks back I was on a nature hike and I came across piles of slate slabs… I took a few and they have been in my garage since. I am always curious about materials and their natural properties, honestly these works began as an experiment. The bear slate is unfinished. It was my first experiment, I had it in mind for a Christmas gift actually. I sanded “Welcome” off the top portion, in doing this I discovered that the slate is actually quite flaky, but low grit sandpaper removes acrylic paint very easily. I plan on stenciling the word later on, I am terrible at painting fonts! The house on the left ,I painted after I was inspired by a “thatched roof” book I was reading recently. For future reference, I am wondering if a layer of polyurethane would possibly protect the slates as they are very fragile ( also very heavy ). I have more also slate pieces- Jenn, Taylor?
Quilling- Thinking about Lindsay B ( Brette)
After reading Lindsay’s post in regards to the recent artist, Courtney Mattison, I made connections to the art of paper quilling. Here are student works from previous years. Although we explored various forms of type face within this unit, I am now thinking that are some amazing possibilities to further explore with the art of paper sculpture . Mattison creates complex sculptures using clay and various glazes inspired by her interests in preserving and also advocating for unique sea lifes. My students could design three dimensional sculptures within the parameters of quilling, but also learning about aquatic culture ( STEAM! ) Mattison states, ” the brittle porcelain anemone tentacles and coral branches break if improperly handled, similar to the delicate bodies of reef organisms”… as paper quilling is a delicate process also. What a great resource to include in instruction- this artist rocks! Thanks for the ideas Lindsay!
Heather Day Art
WIP- Water Color JB
So I accidentally started using micron fine points to make intricate designs and the gouache ended up washing it all away. I really liked how they looked and I’m going to be putting them back in my work as I layer everything in the next couple of days. I have been looking at Heather Day she is a young abstract artist from the west coast and I really love her work. I’ll post some images soon. For now, this is what I have.

Artwork
Continuing with the idea of observing place, I started doing these photo collages of different places/element of my school blending together. I tried experimenting with the effects that black & white vs color images have against one another. I’m not sure if I should also try to incorporate paint into them as I have been doing. Thoughts?
Melissa M Final Image of Pan Pastel Drawing Place/Visual Culture
I have finally finished my first drawing dealing with place and visual culture. I have placed two images up that I would love to have your opinions on. I placed neutral colors (white and black) behind the cutout areas. I prefer the black background, but I wanted to have some opinions on which is a stronger composition.
