I just recently started a new teaching job as a full time teacher at Kingston City High School. The school that I was previously working at was all special education. Whether that be emotionally, physically, mentally, or a combination of all three. My current job is one that I always wanted. I have a really great team (six others) in just the high school, and they are all really supportive and are constantly mentoring me and helping me out with the day to day struggles within our district. That being said my job still has its challenges. When I was hired I was told that I would have homeless students and students that are on the track to an Ivy League school all within the same class. I have seen this now first hand and trying to accommodate such a large array of students is tough, and I am still trying to find the happy medium of it all.

In terms of my graduate studies, they are a bit overwhelming, but I am trying to trudge through. I have read some really great articles this past week for essay number two that have aligned with what I want to continue to do in my class room. I am interested in Visual Culture, and meaningful art making along with what it means to be in a community. I’m sure I’m going to hone these ideas and simplify my approach and research, but for now I am enjoying reading about all three of these ideas.

  1. Jenn, make sure you say Hi to my aunt at the high school! Congrats on the job! I agree, I’m a bit overwhelmed right now as well. I was telling my dad today I feel like I’ve been back at school for three months and its only been two weeks! I find it hard to incorporate the articles into my classroom so far, but I think that once everything settles down at school I’ll be able to rework some of my lessons.

  2. I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying Kingston High School! I feel the diversity of your students, while a challenge, can also lead to some great opportunities in your teaching, as well as even for them in terms of their own art-making. As you mentioned you are interested in the idea of community, it also might be fun to explore Kingston itself. I remember even just driving through it during undergrad, there was a large variety of neighborhoods and it might help you further understand/connect with your students.

  3. Jenn,

I’m glad that you find your teaching space conducive to the affinities you desire. Have 6 colleagues sounds like a supportive space. My first high school had, I think 7 total and it proved to be nice having them to bounce ideas. I’m sure your prior experience of accommodating different learners will benefit you in your classroom spaces. I look forward to reading your proposal and I hope the readings are sparking interest.
