I really fell on love with this artist when I saw a show at the DIA Beacon NY about 4 years ago. At first, I was perplexed, I did not really understand her installations. Large spiders, looming from the ceilings with sewn appendages, seeming to swallow viewers upon introduction. However, after researching her motives, I discovered that originally she studied philosophy and mathematics, which surprised me.

Upon arrival-in New York in the late 60s,  Louise would hold Sunday critiques at her loft in Chelsea where she would provide upcoming artists with helpful feedback to further their art processes. To be honest, I miss these sessions. I think to be surrounded by fellow artists, and being able to share thoughts and ideas, really can further and better a artist. I can remember myself being enthralled with critiques in my undergraduate studies. How I really miss these valuable sessions… now its seems we work all day and we are missing the raw inspirations of other artists…..

The reconstruction of memory are very prevalent in her life works… including her fathers infidelities. Her early studies of psychoanalysis in 1952 continued through the 1960s.  Which further led her to inspire the feminist art movement in the early 70’s, thus furthered her inspirations to develop the study of body art.  In these current times of turmoil, I think its important for us to not to hide behind our fears, but to expose the injustices we see and experience daily, within our art. I say the bolder the better….

Bourgeois seems to capture her own psychological pain, both unconscious and conscious within her works…. I am envious as I strive to create my own body of artworks that can radiate my own personal beliefs.   Clearly, Louise stood for originality and boldness. Her later subject matter explicitly symbolizes 3 dimensional forms, this was rare for woman to represent during that time. Her artworks also transcend multimedia, including printmaking, sculpture and installations.  Later in life, she continued to make art that she considered ” therapeutic” that involves the unconscious mind,  desire and body. She is absolutely a mentor artist because she was working as a conceptual artist for 98 years.. utilizing thoughts, beliefs and standards as a driving force to motivate inspirational artworks thus leaving an imprint on her viewers souls….
