A lot of what Lamott was saying is sort of confusing and a little difficult to navigate. Between story to story is was different, but one thing that I thought of while reading this was that she was writing very much like an artist would create. We get thoughts in our heads, we move from idea to idea and we create by intermingling ideas on one surface. Much like Lamott was saying. One quote by E.L. Doctorow that Lamott referenced was “writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way”. I thought that this was profound. I have been struggling with what to do next with my studio work, and I am a very impatient person. I like things to have a concrete plan and get upset when I deem things either pointless or not worth my time. Purely for the fact that I need to know what is going on. This helped put my artistic practices into new light. I don’t need to know where I am going, but as long as I keep moving things will work out.
