I decided to watch the documentary My Mic Sound Nice: The Truth About Women And Hip Hop. (extra credit) It is directed and produced by Ava Duveray and the documentary is about an inside look on the women who made hip hop. The documentary talks about how that there are female rappers slowly getting their fame such as Missy Elliot and Lil Kim. Telling their stories about how female rappers are being in a male dominated industry. Around 27 minutes in they talk about why record labels do not hire female rappers/singers. They think because “they don’t sell” where you have people like Missy Elliot selling her music and making money out of it. A few more minutes in they talk about budgeting for women. They talk about how women need to get their hair done, nails, make-up, clothing etc. Where they compare males they do not need all that extra things for them to perform. In the video 35 minutes in they talk about Nicki Minaj. “Nicki Minaj is appropriating the script of the successful female MC that have come before her” 35:23. She does all of these things being hyper sexual, being a bit extra/ crazy and the most important thing is to be sorta under a male rapper in the industry. They compare her to like lil wayne, lil kim, eve and missy. This documentary definitely put more information out there about female MC’s being in the industry. How they need to be a certain type of way to get their names out there. Lucky there’s someone like Missy still making music and is still here today. At the end of the day there are female MC’s out there just need to look for them.
