Funny thing is last year a friend of mines told me to watch Roxanne Roxanne because its a good watch on Netflix. I thought they were trying to be funny because of my name, I always get asked “Have you heard the song Roxanne?”  My response is always if its about the hooker, NO. lol With nothing else to do one day I watched it and was pretty disappointed I never heard of this particular Roxanne. Things are different growing up in the city especially the projects. The trials and tribulations already imposed on the black community so to see such a spicy young lady have no fear should be a surprise but its in the blood of where she grew up. It’s amazing though how she had no gender fear. Anyone that doubted her could come and get it and the fact she charged was genius.

It was sad to see the abuse she endured and of course at the hands of a low life slime ball who really deserved to be under the jail. In the early 1980s women were not breaking barriers the way she was. She became a hip hop legend all the while providing for her family. Hustle and Drive. I think about the way female rappers now don’t like to give credit to those before them or feel like they are the first to do it but in reality much respect needs to be given out to emcees like Roxanne Shante who wasn’t afraid to start a pathway. Although young she was fearless and found warmth in a cold and nasty world. She found empowerment in keeping her morals while being in a male dominated industry without having to over sexualize herself. A mastermind of her time yet interesting how we can relate still to this day.
