In episodes 8 and 9 we see how Mylene’s disco career is growing immensely, but with this growth she is being controlled more and more by men from the studio and her father. Mylene has no control over her career, and this is shown explicitly in episode 8 before and after her performance in the show as her father and Roy are pressuring her into the messages that she presents on the show. Mylene’s father continues to limit her ability as an artist as he wants her to solely focus on making the content of her music religious, and Roy in episode 9 tries to push Mylene to be an oversexualized disco queen. Shao towards the end of the episode tries to come at Mylene, and further emphasizes that she will never be a successful disco queen because she does not have the sex appeal such as Donna Summers or Tina Turner.

“Sexism has been described as the domination of women” (Rose, 151)

“In these songs and many others, women are valuable only because they are sexually desirable and willing” ( Rose, 150)

What really stood out to me the most was in episode 9 where the three men are all in Roy’s office talking about Mylene possibly making an album, but in order for that album to be successful the music cannot be religious. In this scene all of these men are talking about Mylene’s career and image, but she is not there to speak for herself and explain how she wants to present herself as an artist. Her father is the REAL problem out of all of the men controlling her career. In episode 9 we see how he completely tries to use her talents for his own benefits for his church, and disregards all of the efforts she has made to get to the point that she has reached.

These two episodes highlight how women experience sexism in different ways as they are objectified and controlled. Throughout the episode Mylene has no control over her career and is only spoken about as a means to an end for the goals of the men that are supposedly trying to help her with her career.
