Sexism is everywhere; we know this”, hip hop is often blamed for normalizing sexism. It is hard to pin point a structure in society that is to blame for normalization of sexism. As stated in the reading those in urban schools have many other things to worry about then sexism. A few episodes before, the Bronx was experiencing a major power outage for days. Other individuals don’t have to worry about situations like this occurring and affecting their everyday lives. Poverty affects the Bronx, dealing with sexism issues is not a priority. In the Get Down Mylene is objectifed in almost every every episode, but in episodes 8 and 9 you see it emphasized. Cadillac instantly shows interest in her and says “I’m gonna sign her into my record label, and make her into my wife. Im gonna shake and bake her all night long make lil baby Cadillac’s. This shows how producers look at women as an investment and not solely based on their talent. Artist like Nelly have been accused of sexism but deny it and say that they’re attacking him. “Instead of having a serious and sustained conversation about this issue, too many rappers and corporate music representatives interpret black women’s concerns as an attack on all black men, a betrayal of hip hop”. Should we blame the artists, producers, executives for allowing the exploitation of females? As Mylene is performing at Platinum Boogie the talk show host asks if she is single and she is forced to say she isn’t because of the attention she will receive from the male population. Getting to the root of sexism is difficult but it will help make a major change in society. It is not fair to solely blame the hip hop culture for an issue that plays outside of hip hop. For example, during the same time era of The Get Down there were no women in government compared to now.
