Vinson_“De/Constructing Gender and Sexuality”

Thus far in this course I have learned to rethink some views that I carried about feminism and how women portray their beliefs through performing in a Hip Hop genre. Whether it is body objectification or lyrics women performers have alot to understand about their roles in deconstructing gender and sexuality. Thus far we listened to Cardi B, Rah Digga, Salt n Pepa, and Lauren Hill each shared in her own way her insecurities, challenges fears and struggles of being an icon in the Hip Hop Game. I always gravitated towards Lauren Hill’s messages of self preservation and faith ( To Zion and her strong lyrics,
“How you think you’re really gon’ pretend Like you wasn’t down and you called him again? Plus, when you give it up so easy you ain’t even foolin’ him
If you did it then, then you’d probably fuck again”….

Such a huge contrast from Cardi B’s ideology “First of all, I rap about my pussy because she’s my best friend, and second of all it’s because it seems like that’s what people want to hear,” Cardi said. And so either way these women are facing some tough issues of sexuality and empowerment. One of the readings I found most relateable is “The Real Hip Hop” (Ph)eminists of the New School more precisely the section,
“Female MC’s use Hip Hop to develop and display their lyrical skills as well as present and challenge what it means to be a young black woman in America. They are aware that the same system that stereotypes them as promiscuous, culpable, and irresponsible actually exploits their lives and bodies to promote sexism, racism and class privilege.” (pp 158-159)
Could fear of rejection be one of the main reasons why we made the transition from Lauren Hill to Cardi B? I feel more will be revealed through our readings and discussions.
