I find a lot of the commentary on the origins of hip hop to be very intriguing. Prior to taking this class, I thought I had a pretty expansive education on hip hop. However, there are many artists I do not know about that have been able to pave the way for a lot of the artists I know today. Some I have heard of before, i.e. Crazy Legs, but my knowledge of them was minimal. Many artists I only really knew because I found the name familiar, but I was not aware of how great their influence has been in hip hop culture.
While reading the article, It’s All One by ____, I came across a new artist that I had never heard of; Deep Dickollective. I hadn’t been aware that there were known gay artists at the time and I feel as though the community has come a long way since this time period. Artists now like Kehlani and Young M.A. openly make music about their experiences, and they’re pretty popular. I wonder what the music of Deep Dickollective and other gay artists sounded like then and if it is similar to that of Kehlani and Young M.A. in terms of being open about their homosexuality or if their music was more synonymous to everyone elses.
I also did have a question about a particular term that was used during this part of the reading. Tim’M used the term “inappropriate faggotry” and I’m not necessarily sure what they mean by this. Is this related to the bashing of queer people in music or is this something different?
