ADVISING RESOURCES FOR SOE FACULTY

ADVISING AT SUNY NEW PALTZ

Here at SUNY New Paltz, advising involves coordination between general advisors who are part of the office of Academic Advisers (OAA) and who work with undeclared students, and faculty advisors and professional advisors who work with declared students.  In addition, the OAA’s general advisors use Starfish as a student management system to monitor their caseload students’ academic progress and by providing timely student support in response to flags raised by their instructors in Starfish.  General advisors work with students to create an individualized success plan to support their needs within the context of holistic educational planning throughout the semester.  General advisors are equipped and positioned to refer students to the appropriate campus resources to support their individual needs, including the student’s faculty advisor, Center for Student Success, Career Resource Center, Psychological Counseling Center, among others.  In the link below, you will find the list of liaison advisors who you can contact for help.

In 2018, SUNY New Paltz was selected as one of 12 institutions nationally to participate in the Excellence in Academic Advising (EAA) inaugural cohort. Over 60 campus stakeholders served as members of the EAA Self-Study Task Force over the first year of the project. The members of the self-study task force – faculty, students, staff, and administrators – engaged in a comprehensive evidence- and standards-based review of the College’s academic advising program. In examining the current state of advising across campus, the task force has developed recommendations that will improve academic advising at New Paltz and enhance the overall student experience. These recommendations align with New Paltz’s mission, values, and institutional priorities.  Find the recommendations in the link below:
