Hello. My name is Gowri Parameswaran. I am Professor and Chair of the Educational Studies and Leadership at the State University of New York at New Paltz. I obtained my Masters and Ph D in Cognitive/Educational Psychology from Rutgers University. I grew up in India and moved to the USA as an adult; since my move, I’ve gone back regularly to her country of origin where I have conducted cross-cultural research. My explorations center on gender, socioeconomic status and culture and their impact on children and adult cognition both in the USA and in India. In recent years I have written theoretical articles critiquing the historical assumptions around developmental psychology and how to teach about topics such as the privileging of the Global North over the Global South. I have published books and articles on diversity and inclusion in education and in lifespan study. I am currently working on exploring the exploitative consequences of the history of research on parenting in psychology in the age of structural adjustment and reduced government services for families in poverty.
When I am not working, I love spending time with my family. I have two sons, both adults and it is wonderful to see the new adventures they are engaged in and the small influence that I have played and continue to play in their loves. My hobbies include writing, singing, hiking and taking long walks in my neighborhood. I am very active in my local community issues, especially as they relate to issues of discrimination and racism.
