Information for the 2014 meeting of the
The NorthEastern Evolutionary Psychology Society (NEEPS)

To be held between April 10 and 13 (Thursday through mid-Sunday) of 2014 on the campus of the State University of New York at New Paltz.

Meeting of the most dynamic, collaborative, passionate, and student-oriented evolutionary psychology society the world over. David Buss will serve as keynote speaker while renowned philosopher Philip Kitcher of Columbia (and author of Living with Darwin) will give an affiliated talk (hosted by the Philosophy Department). And renowned NEEPSter Gordon Gallup will lead a special invited panel on the interface of evolutionary psychology and health. And NEEPS Past-President Rosemarie Sokol Chang will give a special NEEPS Past-Presidential Keynote Address. Extraordinary collaborative opportunities and a highly supportive context – nestled in the mountains – just an hour from NYC. Where NEEPS began in 2007. Will include meetings of the Feminist Evolutionary Psychology Society and the Applied Evolutionary Psychology Society. Saturday night banquet. Etc. Do.not.miss.this.event!

New Paltz, NY, home of the inaugural NEEPS conference in 2007 (and of the 4th annual conference in 2010) is a quaint (yet funky) little town mid-way between Albany and NYC (in the heart of the Hudson Valley). FEES AS FOLLOWS:

Professional/post-doc (Membership, Subscription to Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences, included): $140 pre-registration (submitted prior to April 1); on-site or late = $180

Student: $50 pre-registration (submitted prior to April 1); on-site or late = $55; Students have option of paying additional $35 for a subscription to EBS ($90 total)

Member only (no conference registration; receives EBS subscription; this rate applies to student or professional): $50

NOTE that conference registration fees will include standard food / beverages such as snacks and coffee during breaks and at the business meeting along with appropriate food and beverage options at the reception (which will be Thursday evening) and banquet (Saturday evening – buffet style). Rumor is that Saturday’s banquet will include a reprise of Darwinian charades …

PROPOSAL SUBMISSION:

To submit a proposal for a talk (20-minute slot with 15 minutes for presentation and 5 minutes for question/answer session) OR to submit a proposal for a poster (typically 4’tall * 6’wide; no larger than that, please), please click here. We will also be accepting proposals for symposia.

Deadline for submission was 11:59 p.m. EST on Friday, January 31st, 2014.

We are also using 500-1000 word structured abstracts for reviews of Oral and Poster presentation proposals; Background, Hypothesis/Hypotheses, Method, Results, and Conclusion. Symposium proposals should be a 500-1000 word descriptive overview. Please also create a 120 word abstract for inclusion in the conference program. Please encourage your friends, students, and colleagues to participate.

LODGING:
There is a relatively small inn within walking distance of campus and several other hotels, motels, and resorts in the immediate vicinity of New Paltz. Here is a suggested list of options. Note that, as is always true, it would probably be wise to make reservations as soon as possible.

1. The Inn at Orchard Heights is a fine bed and breakfast which may offer a special rate for NEEPS members during the conference. One person in a one bedroom is $125/night.  Two people in a one bedroom is $140/night.  Two people in a two bedroom is $155/night.  Be sure to mention you’re attending the NEEPS conference at SUNY New Paltz! See: http://www.innatorchardheights.com to reserve a room and/or for information.

2. The Minnewaska Lodge is a beautiful new structure that is about a 10-minute drive from campus. It is adjacent to the cliffs of the Shawangunk mountains and is simply a very high-quality option (see: http://www.minnewaskalodge.com/).  They also are offering a special conference rate for NEEPS members (~$149-~$165) / night plus tax; Call them at: 845-255-1110).

3. The Mohonk Mountain House a world-renowned resort, is a historical landmark that sits atop a breathtaking mountain 15 minutes from campus. Not cheap (… OK – it’s VERY EXPENSIVE)  – but if you have the bucks, it’s an incredible place. Perhaps stay here if you win the lottery right before the conference! Website: http://www.mohonk.com.

4. The New Paltz Super 8 is about a 5-minute drive to campus. It’s simple and inexpensive and close enough to town and campus that you “could” walk if you had to. Most NEEPSters tend to stay here. **The Super 8 is willing to give NEEPSters a conference discount!  $75/ night for Thursday and Friday and $85 for Saturday night.  When you call to make reservations, to get the discounted price, be sure to tell them you’re attending the NorthEastern Evolutionary Psychology Society Conference.  

5. The New Paltz Rodeway Inn and Suites is a nice lodging option about 3 miles from campus with rooms in the range of $70 and $100 a night.

AIRPORTS:
Three general options exist to get to New Paltz by air.

A. The three New York City airports (Newark, John F. Kennedy, and LaGuardia) are all within a two-hour drive. See: http://www.ny.com/transportation/airports/ for information on each airport (including information on ground transportation to travel upstate).

B. The Albany airport is about 70 miles from New Paltz (see: http://www.albanyairport.com/). They also have ground transportation options listed on their website.

C. Stewart International Airport in Newburgh is about a half hour from New Paltz. See: http://www.swfny.com/. They too list ground transportation options on their site. TRY FOR STEWART IF YOU CAN – it is CONVENIENT!

PARKING:

According to Dave Barry, the only difference between the real world and college is that in the real world, “There is parking out there!” … As is typical of college campuses, parking is somewhat tricky at New Paltz. However, we will, for the first time ever, have a NEEPS-ONLY parking lot for the conference! NO NEED FOR PARKING PASSES. And we’ll have some clear signage pointing folks toward the lot (which will be near the buildings that will house the goods for the conference). Look for some awesome NEEPS signs upon approaching the campus – pointing toward Lot 28 on Route 32 / South Manheim Blvd. And check this out for a campus map: http://www.newpaltz.edu/map/).
