What’s Up in Hip Hop?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

What’s Up in Hip Hop? is a two-part assignment.

Part One: the blog post

On a week of their choice, crews will prepare a blog post discussing a current happening in Hip Hop to the What’s Up in Hip Hop? page.

The post must:

  1. include at least 250 words per crew member
  2. demonstrate each individual’s contribution to the post
  3. highlight the relevance of the happening to the course (ties to readings, complicates a theory, etc.)
  4. include relevant images and videos with captions and copyright info
  5. hyperlink to the news item
  6. be titled appropriately (e.g. “Is it the “Year of Cardi B“? posted on behalf of 2LiveCrew”)
  7. be tweeted using the course hashtag #HipHopS18
  8. be uploaded by the beginning of class time

Part Two: the roundtable

On the day your blog post is due, your crew will participate in a roundtable discussion in class and then facilitate a class discussion on the topic.

In class that day, your crew must:

  • elect someone to summarize/describe the article/happening in approximately 5 minutes to give your classmates context
  • take turns describing (paraphrasing, revising) what you posted in the blog in 3-5 minutes depending on crew size
  • be prepared to ask one another questions for clarification, conversation stimulation, and generous critique
    • Create open-ended questions which are interesting, engaging, and promote discussion. Avoid questions where the participants can answer with yes or no responses.
  • after roundtable members have presented their positions, engaged in conversation with each other, then you will take questions from your classmates to open the conversation and bring in readings from the day
