Central Focus: Build a 5 lesson learning segment that incorporates your Mentor Artist Lesson and is centered around a unifying “Big Idea.”.   Align this learning segment with NCCAS standards. 

Rationale: Designing a logical sequence of lessons inspired by a unifying big idea and aligned with developmentally appropriate P-12 arts standards is a core competence for art educators.  Building upon skills and knowledge gained in prior lesson planning experiences, this assignment will address scope and sequence of lessons to develop your future students’ artistic and personal growth.   

Learning Objectives  

Curriculum Design 1: Generate substantive, inquiry-based curricular ideas based on contemporary arts practices and other culturally relevant sources that relate to a single “central focus.” (Critical Inquiry and Intellectual Development) 

Curriculum Design 2: Translate developmental information, understanding of diverse learners, and culturally responsive teaching into curriculum design, including scope and sequence of multiple lessons for adolescent art learners. (Culturally Responsive Practice and Social Justice, Democratic Citizenship and Student Advocacy) 

Curriculum Design 3 : Organize lessons and learning segments aligned with NCCAS National Core Art Standards. (Critical Inquiry and Intellectual Development, Professional Skills and Disposition) 

Procedure  

Build a 5 lesson learning segment that incorporates your Mentor Artist Lesson.   Include 2 and 3d projects.   Include lessons that utilize at least 2 of the following media: 

  • digital technology such as photoshop, simple circuits, animation etc…
  • 3-D such as cardboard sculpture, clay, fiber, site specific installation, .
  • 2-D  such as drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, etc…

At least two lessons references artists from historically marginalized groups. (ex. African-American, Latinx, LGBTQ, Disabled, etc…) 

Step one: Brainstorm Map.  This is an initial concept map/sketch exploring your big idea, with 5 possible lessons and connections between them.  Submit 

Step two: Final Concept Map.  Diagram your learning segment, taking into account your Big Idea, NCAS Standards and the specific sequence of lessons you will teach in order to build your students’ art skills and understandings.   

Step three: Material Research.   Explore the materials and techniques you will use for at least 2 of your proposed lessons, troubleshooting and revising as needed.  Create at least 3 examples of each.  

Step Four:  First Draft .   Using the ARE302 Learning Segment Template available on Brightspace, prepare and print out a full and complete draft of your learning segment  or peer and instructor review.  

Step Five:  Final Draft.  Using the ARE302 Learning Segment Template available on Brightspace, submit a full and complete version of your learning segment, including visual resources (material research and mentor artist works) and other research/instructional resources. 

Step Six:  Slideshow presentation. A ten-minute oral presentation (via Google slides) of your learning segment for the class.
