Tutor Training Reflection Area

In this area, you will be asked to reflect on module readings, videos, podcasts, and scenarios as well as enter into a discussion with others about these topics.

Reading about theories and research is a step removed from actually putting some of those ideas into practice. In fact, sometimes when we are in the moment with a student brainstorming ideas for an upcoming assignment or trying to untangle a sentence, a particular theory or approach by which we have become intrigued may not actually work. In those moments, we can become frustrated, but it is when we take time to reflect upon the intersection between theory and practice that we grow as tutors and as instructors.

In her article, “Integrating Theory and Research withPractice,” Martha E. Casazza notes, “By incorporating theory and research into practice and critically reflecting on the outcomes, tutors and mentors can . . . begin to develop guiding principles. These principles then provide a solid foundation not only for practice but for innovation” (28).
