This assignment takes the place of a traditional final. It is a comprehensive assignment that will take the entire semester to complete. By completing all assignments included (Class Book, Lesson Plan 1, Lesson Plan 2, and Planning Commentary), you will have begun to practice the process of planning a unit of study. Portions of this assignment are due throughout the semester. Please see the syllabus for due dates, and note that some components of the mini unit require that you turn in drafts prior to turning in the final versions.
The major components of this assignment are:
- Decide on a theme: Possible themes include transportation, weather, community, insects, family, food. Look to your fieldwork classroom for ideas. Remainder of the mini units components will revolve around this theme.
- Class Book: In the Class Book portion of the mini unit, you will 1) plan a truncated version of a lesson plan, 2) read aloud a book to your fieldwork class according to the plan, and 3) create a class book with your fieldwork class. - Lesson Plan 1: This lesson plan will be focused on a literary reading skill, and must be based on a literary text. Here is the blank template. Here is a completed sample.
- Lesson Plan 2: This lesson plan will be focused on an informational reading skill, and must be based on an informational text. Here is the blank template, rubric, and LP1/LP2 crosswalk we went over in class on 4/24.
- Planning Commentary: The purpose of this component of the unit is to help prepare the edTPA. As a teacher, you will be required to substantiate your instructional decisions, and working on your commentaries for the edTPA will help you practice doing so. This will be your first attempt at the commentary, and will draw on your lesson planning work. Blank Template; Annotated Template; rubric. You may choose either your LP1 or LP2 for this assignment.
