I learned that there are many ways to teach and access early reading achievement. One way to teach early reading skills is to work backwards from tests such as the ABT and the PST. Teach students to blend words together by orally segmenting words into units. This will help students hear each unit in the word. The teacher can then isolate sounds in the word. For example, if the teacher leaves off an ending sound, the students will be able to identify the missing ending of the word. I also learned that teachers and caregivers should not assume that their student or child should already know something. For example, that we read left to right from top to bottom.
Two connections I made while reading this section of the text is that I see my CT doing activities that will strengthen early reading skills and comprehension. At the end of the day in order for students to pack up they must identify the letter shown to them. The CT changes each week whether the letters that are shown are capital or lower case. My CT also segments words and the children blend the word together. The CT speaks as if she is a robot and the students have to figure out the word she is saying by her hand moments down her arm that represent each unit.
I am wondering how to teach students who do not engage in hand movements that are modeled by the teacher to learn how to segment and blend words together.
