“Every child deserves a year’s growth.”
This really stuck with me because I think it is so important to not get hung up at what a child seemingly cannot do at one point in the year. They don’t deserve to get their box checked off that they cannot do something, so long as they are one step closer to getting there today compared to yesterday.
“The CCSS advise us about where children need to be and what they need to know– we’re the ones who get to plan and decide how children best get there.”
Wow, I wish I could get this on a business card to hand out when people ask me why I would want to be a teacher while CCSS are in place. This gives responsibility back to the teacher and child, working together to meet goals that benefit the child as a whole and not a government document that supposedly dictates why a child cannot perform “to standard.” Children still need guidance and need to be scaffolded to meet goals and standards.
