Going into English 170, I was not expecting much. I was only taking the class to fulfill a GE so I wasn’t expecting to care much, however, I did end up enjoying the class. The class itself was helpful, but my peers were some of the nicest and funniest people. Through them I was able to improve a lot on my writing with their critiques as well as my professor, which in turn helped my writing in the future overall. I will say that my vocabulary has improved significantly with suggestions from my peers, and I have also improved on my intros as well. On my argument essay, I had received helpful criticism from my professor and he gave me an opportunity to rewrite and revise. I took that chance, revised my argument and fleshed it out more thoroughly, taking his critiques in consideration, and was able to improve my essay to be more sophisticated. Through my oral presentation, I was able to lessen my anxiety for future presentations. The class I was in was extremely welcoming and helpful when it came to things like this, which made me feel better overall. I was able to use this in another oral presentation I had in a class and was able to feel more confident in myself. I took away from the class the true meaning of rhetoric and how it’s used in the outside world. I did not realize how much rhetoric really is used in media, news and even casual conversations I have with my friends. It gave me a different perspective on the world and more insight on how to analyze how people use rhetoric in certain settings to get a point across. I think it’s very interesting and made me more analytical of media, which is something I enjoy doing. I wish there was another oral presentation or some sort of public speaking since I do really struggle with that, however the one was enough to really break me out of my shell. I appreciated the inclusion of public speaking but wish it was touched on more. I understand more how rhetoric and enthymemes work, which has helped me improve my own areas of writing while also becoming more critical of others to make sure they improve as well. I believe these will be valuable in the future when I become a teacher.
