Assessment Policy

Education Council members further refined the wording for the School of Education Assessment Policy that departments considered this academic year (2019-2020). The following wording was approved unanimously by EdCo members in April 2020 by electronic vote. This policy was communicated to faculty on May 6, 2020 and refers to any program assessments (e.g., planning, dispositions, P-12 learning, STIFA) utilized in programs within the SoE.

“Candidates must earn a rating of Acceptable on a minimum of 80% of the items on each assessment required for their specific program. However, during a culminating experience, candidates may not earn a rating of Unacceptable on any item. Failure to meet either of these expectations may result in a failing grade in the course.”

Program faculty were asked to determine how the policy would be communicated to students, faculty and/or other professionals (e.g., cooperating teachers) involved in the program assessments. (For example, in the Literacy and Special Education programs, assessment information is provided in advising guidelines which are distributed to students in an initial advising session.) Inclusion of the policy should also be considered in the syllabi for all courses in which a program assessment is utilized, such as Student Teaching/Clinic/Practicum.
