spilling my ideas

Comic!

My partner was Allison, and she gave me instructions on how to plant a seed. I originally start out with 8 or 9 steps in my first draft which got taken out as it was difficult to cut Allison’s instructions down. I decided to cut it down to about 6 steps with one close up shot of the seed packet. I had asked what type of seeds we were planting and came to the conclusion of tomatoes. I think was too little of steps to be able to completely explain this specific process, so the 7 I used feels like it works.

I told Abby my instructions. She was able to clearly understand the process of how to load a dishwasher. We did have to look a up what a cascade pod looks like so she knew what to draw. Overall, this was a really fun process to go through, having to teach someone a simple tasks with few steps.

Greta: I find it amazing how you have so little words on your comic! You were able to successfully explain the task with mainly using images. The detail in the images allows us to see what is taking place and it makes it really easy to follow! I also love the little tomato plant at the end! Our end result! Yay!

I like that you labeled each of the visual sections with numbers and arrows to help the viewer understand what each next step was. Your illustrations are so cute especially the little hand at the top of the images. There is attention to detail in your drawings and now I want to grow my plant collection!- Abby Herman

Hey Drew! The aesthetic of your design came out beautifully. Your use of material like colored pencil, and colored paper really help to enhance the viewer’s understanding of your comic. I also think your minimal use of words worked wonderfully. Awesome job!

Nice job! Very pleasant art style, and great framing for the paper. I will say though, I can’t really tell what some of the steps are meant to be, so perhaps some explanation in words could be incorporated. Whether its on the paper itself, or a separate explanation guide.

The style is super cute, I love the design of the background paper. The designed paper is fun but it does not take away from the drawings and steps. Your steps are really clear and easy to understand. I like how each step is easy to read despite there being no words. – Shay

Drew- these are the cutest little drawings! I love them so much and they are super clear as to what the goal of the comic is. The only direction that confuses me is step one but it could be because I don’t know a ton about plants haha! The rest of the directions are super clear and the fact that you were able to execute this. without any words is super impressive. Well done! -Hailey

    Hi Drew!

I love your comic! The drawings are so legible, and I love the way it’s laid out on the paper; the only part where I can see it being a little confusing for some is within step one, so I might suggest adding some text there- but I really think it’s great as is. Also, the plant washi tape as a border was a really nice touch. You really hit it out of the park! Great work (:

Jess Lauro – Hi Drew, I appreciate that the fact that the plant was a tomato plant was left as a surprise for the end! This creates a how-to for something broader than just a tomato plant; it could be for any seed! Lovely job.

Linzy Bush- I like the addition of the colored tape to boarder the comic. I believe it really helps the overall feel of the comic. The images are beautifully drawn and is visually engaging. Step 2 is my favorite it just looks so cute! The end is also a nice touch where it has an image and text “Tomato!”
