Applications are still open for the Thomas Casey Memorial Scholarship for Integrity in Journalism – Journalism Students Please Apply!
Several years ago, I had the privilege of teaching Tom Casey, a wonderful student. After graduation, he started a promising career in journalism. He gained national attention when he bravely resisted pressure to write a story in a way that he thought was ethically wrong and got fired. You can read about it here. Tom died at the age of 26 in a car accident, just before he was to start graduate school. Tom’s parents, a school custodian and a nurse, decided to establish a scholarship for journalism students to honor Tom’s memory. I worked closely with the Caseys, who are beautiful and generous human beings, on making this opportunity a reality.
