Peter Agris Memorial Journalism Scholarships is holding its 30th annual awards for DMJ and Comm students of Greek Heritage. The careers of 141 aspiring journalists have been supported by grants totaling almost three-quarters of a million dollars over the last thirty years through the partnership initiated by the Alpha Omega Council and the Agris Family to honor the memory of Peter Agris, the founder of the Council and the publisher of The Hellenic Chronicle newspaper.
These proud Greek American communications professionals serve as anchors in news markets across this nation, correspondents covering wars and politics at home and abroad, press officers at the State Department and on Capital Hill, and teaching future generations of journalists. We are proud to have played a role in launching these talented individuals who now contribute to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, CNN, Frontline, National Public Radio, 60 Minutes, National Geographic, The History Channel, The Atlantic, Nightline, and Fodors, and have also authored several books – including on the Greek debt crisis. Donations from individual Alpha Omegans, Agris family members, friends, and colleagues have made possible the dedicated funding of non-renewable grants of $5,000 each.
The applicant must be of Greek American heritage and be a U.S. Citizen. Must be a current full-time graduate/undergraduate enrolled at an accredited university in the U.S. with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Must actively participate in school, community & church and demonstrate financial need.
