Hearst Seeking Freelance Reporters for Points North, an Upstate Regional News Site

Hearst Newspapers, branded as Points North, is looking for freelance news reporters to cover stories focused in the Hudson Valley, Catskills, Adirondacks and Capitol Regions. The position requires reporters to write three digital stories a day with pictures and an understanding of SEO. Depending on the complexity of the piece and amount of sources Hearst is offering  $150 to $300 per piece.They are creating a combination of centerpiece stories along with clusters of shorter stories to keep the fast growing audience engaged. Duties include reporting, producing, writing, and aggregating stories that reflect the image of the site. You must be able to find interesting, regional stories and be able to quickly report breaking news. As well, you will work closely with the editing team to coordinate daily features and future plans. Requirements include:

  • 2-3 years of relevant experience in reporting and writing in publishing or digital media
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Journalism, Digital Media Studies, Communications, English, Literature or related fields from an accredited college or university, or equivalent, with a record that demonstrates suitable preparation for this role
  • Ability to work autonomously from a remote office while maintaining open communication and a collaborative spirit with the team
  • Excellent news judgment and understanding of media ethics
  • Experience in, and understanding of, the region that includes the Hudson Valley, Capital Region and Adirondacks.
