Prompt: Decolonization is Not a Metaphor (Tuck and Yang)
In an essay or through a public engagement project, students will respond to the provocation that decolonization is not a metaphor with a focus on Puerto Rico.
Essay Guidelines:
- Read Tuck, Eve, and K. Wayne Yang. 2012. “Decolonization Is Not a Metaphor.” Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society 1 (1): 1–40.”
- Respond to the prompt in an 8-10-page research paper using at least 2 of the post-colonial, decolonial, and Indigenous feminist frameworks we’ve covered in class, in addition to 2 outside sources.
- Students will identify and analyze the material and epistemic legacies of colonialism in contemporary Puerto Rico, focus on a contemporary issue effecting the archipelago, and suggest ways feminist movement (not only continental US feminist movement) is and should be participating in the decolonization movement. Submit a properly formatted (header, works cited, citations, etc.) hard copy in class on the Monday before our final meeting.
Public Outreach Project Guidelines:
- Read Tuck, Eve, and K. Wayne Yang. 2012. “Decolonization Is Not a Metaphor.” Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society 1 (1): 1–40.”
- Respond to the prompt in a performance, an action, a video, a painting, a fundraiser, an information campaign, or sculpture, etc.
- Students who opt to complete a public outreach project must receive permission from the instructor at least one week before the last week of classes.
- Public outreach projects are to be submitted along with a three-page reflection paper describing how the project responds to the prompt. Public outreach projects must have a public component to them! In other words, you have to have received some kind of feedback, interaction, or participation. Students have to record live events.
